Why Many Votes Won't Be Tallied On Election Night

California election officials warn that late-arriving mail-in ballots will delay final results, with updates planned periodically as processing continues under stringent state regulations.
Once again, election officials around California, including in Nevada County, are reminding residents about the careful process of releasing mail-in ballot results, due to one of the most stringent processes required in the country. The County’s Clerk-Recorder, Armando Salud-Ambriz says any mail-in ballots received Monday and Tuesday will not be counted tonight. And the majority of residents usually wait that long before returning such ballots…
But Salud-Ambriz says scan-and-go mail-in ballots are also part of the Election Night county, along with anyone voting in person, although that’s a very small percentage. As of Monday afternoon, he said 42-percent of the county’s approximately 76-thousand-700 registered voters had cast ballots. But he says he expects another 30-percent-or-so will turn their ballots in today and those will not be counted tonight…
Nevada County plans to release its first unofficial results shortly after 8 tonight, with updates about every two hours until all in-person votes have been counted. And after Election Night, updated results will be posted every Friday and Tuesday at 4:30pm. And Salud-Ambriz also notes that a new California law could delay state and federal Election Night results. If voting hours are extended at any polling location in the state, because of certain election-related disruptions or violations, election officials statewide must wait until all polling places have closed, before releasing results. This requirement is to help ensure that statewide results are not made public before voting is still underway.
