The Sierra College Museum of Natural History is hiring a part-time director to begin fundraising efforts to become self sufficient and grow in the future. The Sierra college Foundation has offered $90 thousand dollars over the next 3 years to help in the effort. and the foundation expects by year 4 the museum should be completely self sufficient.
Museum board member Susanne Michaels says the Sierra college Museum of Natural History is one of the best in the country. *
Keely Carroll a biology Professor at Sierra College has been named as the part-time museum director. Michaels says gong from a volunteer operated museum to having a dedicated director is just what the museum needed.
In 1978, California’s Proposition 13 brought the museum’s lifeblood funding to a halt. Without adequate funding the museum was unable to continue its level of service to the public. Shortly thereafter, western Placer County’s population began to increase rapidly and the demand for public access for science intensified. The museum continued on, albeit scaled down, on a volunteer basis.
Thanks to volunteer faculty, students, staff and public, the museum has been able to offer modest but continuous educational programs to the public. New exhibits have been designed, funded and completed. Public lectures, programs and field trips have been conducted and eagerly attended.
The Museum is open during regular college hours during the week. It is open on weekends only when there are other activities in the building. For a guided tour, call 916-660-7995 and leave a message.
