Nevada County kids can take a free plane ride this weekend. The local chapter of the Experimental Aircraft Association is hosting a Young Eagle Flight Rally this Saturday from 9 am to noon. Coordinator Paul Bevelhymer says children between the ages of 8 and 17 can take a free flight over Nevada County.
Participants who show up at the Nevada County Airport with their legal guardians will get a flight, a brief explanation of how a plane works, and a certificate signed by the Young Eagles National Chairman, aerobatic pilot Sean D. Tucker. Their certificate will also be signed by their personal pilot. Anyone who takes a ride will also be able to see their name in the Young Eagle’s “World’s Largest Logbook” and receive a free Experimental Aircraft Association Student membership. Young Eagles also have free access to Sporty’s Online Pilot Training Course which can qualify students for the written pilot exam. Students are also qualified for a number of awards and scholarships through the Young Eagles Program.
Bevelhymer says that, since the Young Eagles program was launched in 1992, EAA member volunteers have given rides to more than 1.8 million Young Eagles in more than 90 countries. He says the program is dedicated to encouraging young people interested in planes and flying to pursue their dreams.
Thirteen planes with 24 seats are registered to give rides on Saturday. There will be signs along the road to help drivers and their young pilots find the airport terminal. You can learn more about the Young Eagles program by going online to youngeagles.org.
