A series of phone scams taking place in Northern California and Western Nevada. Scams include claims of delinquent income taxes, warrants for unpaid tickets, and family members being held in custody someplace. In all instances the callers are asking for money to be sent via wire transactions, sending cashiers checks or using gift cards to settle the bill. One Nevada County resident wants to wan people of who was contacting her. Liz McGuire says she was contacted multiple times in the same day.*

McGuire says a second number given to her was answered by someone claiming to be from the US Department of Treasury or The US Department of Justice.

The actual threat stated that as soon the phone was hung up somebody would be coming to the front door.
McGuire says no one came to the door, and the sheriff’s office confirmed that a number of these types of call are occurring in the area.
A senior citizen herself, McGuire wants to warn other senior citizens to not fall prey to the scam.

The sheriff and other law enforcement agencies strongly encourage anyone receiving these types of calls to immediately call law enforcement. Do not share any personal or financial information with the caller; and in no circumstance should you send any sort of payment.
