If a person is stopped and questioned by a Nevada County Sheriff’s Deputy in a patrol Car, that person can assume they are being video taped and recorded. Sheriff’s Patrol cars have been equipped with dash cameras since 2009, and this year the camera’s are being replaced with an updated system. Nevada County Sheriff’s Captain Shannon Moon says the technology is changing rapidly.*

Now that the Sheriff’s Department is ready to purchase the rest of the new equipment the Board was requested to approve a budget amendment which is necessary for the funds to be reallocated from services and supplies to capital assets with no increase in allocations from the General Fund.*

The video storage size of the new system was determined by County Information Systems and Watchguard based on the number of deputies typically in the field on any given shift, and the estimated amount of data they typically collect during their contacts. The recordings are intended to provide an unbiased, visual/audio record of a contact and to supplement deputies’ reports. Captain Moon says the recordings have proven to be a valuable tool in providing important intelligence as well as providing evidence that is used in court to prosecute cases.
