In commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the end of the Civil War, The Nevada County Historical Society has invited two historians to talk about the role that California Volunteers played in serving the union. Richard Hurley and TJ Meeks will present their research on the role of the California Volunteers during the struggle in a multi media display at the Madelyn Helling Library community room this evening. Hurley says 15,000 California recruits took over the role of the Regular Army in the West and fought in a series of dramatic and highly controversial campaigns against Native American tribesmen. The Californians also helped repel the 1862 Confederate invasion of the Southwest. The Multi-Media presentation will run for about 1 hour.
