This morning, The South Yuba River Citizens League was presented with a grant for over 500 thousand dollars from the Department of Fish and Wildlife. Assemblyman Brian Dahle helped present the grant at the Highway 49 crossing of the South fork.
Dahle says that restoring meadows along the Sierra Nevadas can help California survive this drought.
SYRCL’s science director, Rachel Hutchinson, agrees, and says meadows help with the slow release of mountain water.

About half of the money will go towards meadow restoration and the other half will go towards studying the way healthy meadows suppress green house gasses. SYRCL is just one of many groups across northern California studying green house gasses in meadows, and Hutchinson says they’ll be pooling their data to get a better picture of what’s going on.

Meadow restoration is scheduled to be completed in 2020.
